Monarch Butterfly Visit
On Friday a monarch butterfly flew down and landed next to some of us when we were eating lunch. It must have been tired from flying in the wind. It crawled onto Silver's hand and stayed there for a while. Then it flew away. Silver knew how to treat the butterfly carefully so she didn't damage it's fragile body.

Volcanoes
We have been learning about volcanoes. A volcano is when melted rock called lava comes out of a hole in the ground. When the rock comes out it cools down and makes the cone of the volcano. We have lots of volcanoes in Auckland but most of them are extinct and the rest are dormant. If a volcano did erupt near us we would hear news on the radio, TV or internet and have lots of time to make sure we were a safe distance away. Lots of ash would also come out of an erupting volcano.

Comparing Weight
We had to manage ourselves this week whilst we were learning about weight. We had to use the balance scales to compare the weight of two objects. Then we had to use the easi-speak to say what we found out. Listen for our maths language and see if you can guess who's voice you are listening to.
Gymnastics
We are doing gymnastics in P.E. It's great fun. We move around a rotation practising our skills. This week the teachers were helping us on the beam. Check out our backward and forward rolls. We know to tuck our chins to our chests.

Introducing Ourselves
In Reading time, when we are not working with Mrs Irvine, we are practising our reading, writing and speaking. For the last 2 weeks we have been using the digital camera to video our friends introducing themselves. We had to try to stay on task, hold the video camera still and speak in a loud, clear voice. Here are the good introductions.
Earthquakes
We are learning about natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. We made a movie to show people what to do if there was an earthquake. Look at our amazing acting! Can you figure out what is going on?

Length
This week we have been learning about length, height and width. We have been managing ourselves and checking off our activities on a piece of paper. We can choose which order to do our activities in. One of the activities was to make a worm and compare it's length to a friend's worm. We had to take a digital photo of our worms and record a sentence to compare our worms on the easi-speak. Watch this video to hear how William and Connor did. Watch the video below to hear more of our comparisons. Listen for the maths language we were using.
Chandini's Tooth
Cornwall Park
On Tuesday 10th May Year 1 went to Cornwall Park. We ate morning tea and had a play in a fig tree. It had wonderful roots to climb in and out of.
We went into the Information Centre and watched a movie about Maungakiekie.
We walked up the cone of the volcano and saw kumara pits left over from the maori people who lived here once.
We got to the top and saw a view of Auckland. We also looked down into the crater.
Check out our photos and come to our classroom to read the book we made about our trip.
